HELLO! My name is Lisa McMahon. After traveling a winding pathway to teaching, the 2020-2021 year will be my fifth in the classroom. I graduated from Clemson University with degrees in History & Fine Arts; graduate school followed at The University of Georgia in Historic Preservation. I continued my love of school by completing a craftsman certification program in restoration from the City & Guilds of London. My love of history and hands-on, scaffold-climbing work kept me busy for many years until it became clear teaching was where I wanted to land. I returned to Clemson and completed my MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching), certifying in Middle Grades: Social Studies and English/Language Arts.
Saying that I am a voracious reader would be an understatement. Books are the catalyst for acquiring knowledge, traveling to unknown places, meeting outrageous and intriguing individuals, and so much more. We’re going to be visiting many of these ideas this year throughout South Carolina's wild and woolly past from initial settlements to modern times. Equally as important as reading, studying, and analyzing facets of history (and how it fits into the greater scope of the United States' history) is the ability to communicate it . . . whether it be in the written or spoken form. We will combine these vital skills in our South Carolina History class. My goal is to encourage each student to become a conscientious citizen; understanding how our state has contributed to the development of the United States (and the world) is an important first step in this process. I thank my students for thinking at the end of each class.
I keep my eyes open for adventures wherever I go. A book usually isn’t too far away from me whatever I'm up to, either hiking through the North Carolina mountains, traveling on a whim, working in the yard, or lounging in the hammock. My kids (Brinkley and Lily) are my joy and keep me thoroughly entertained, as well as our two cats, one dog, and 10 fish (and any other wildlife that wanders through the yard). You can also sign up to receive E-mail Alerts to notify you when content has been changed on this webpage.
